In the traditional financial services landscape, growth is frequently hindered by departmental silos. Marketing, compliance, product development, and finance often operate as isolated islands, resulting in slow decision-making and delayed product releases. When Wise (formerly TransferWise) set out to redefine cross-border payments, they recognized that transforming technology was only half the battle, they needed to transform their organizational structure.
Instead of rigid hierarchy, Wise structured their company around small, autonomous, cross-functional teams. Each team is given complete ownership over a specific customer outcome or Key Performance Indicator (KPI), such as reducing transfer times in a specific corridor or optimizing compliance checks. These teams operate like independent startups within the company: they design, test, and deploy solutions without waiting for multi-layered management approvals.
